Estadio Centenario

  • Wednesday, 25 January 2012

Our flight to Montevideo from Brazil was heavily delayed, meaning we only got to our hotel in the early hours of the morning. With no time pressure for the next day, we decided to have a late start.

We had a whole day in Uruguay's capital city since our next flight was in the evening. With only one park to visit on today's agenda, we had to find something else to fill in. Montevideo is not overly blessed with tourist attractions. Estadio Centenario though, is a major attraction. Being a football fan, it seemed a good idea to visit the stadium.

Estadio Centenario is famously known for hosting the first-ever World Cup football final. The stadium was built from 1929 to 1930 to host the 1930 World Cup finals.  It is listed by Fifa as one of the football world's classic stadiums, along with the likes of Maracanã, Wembley Stadium , San Siro, Estadio Azteca, and Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. The tower of the stadium houses a top-class museum.

I really enjoyed this museum, and no, I'm not a museum fan.
Whether you're a football fan or not, it's a nice place to visit.
